There's always a file there. As soon as you start the game the first time, it creates the file. It grows as you play. Mine, for example, is 94KB, and I'm about 19 hours in and level 13. My save from three days ago is only 67KB. So if the one you're seeing is really small, it's probably been overwritten.

To install a new save game or make a backup copy of the current save game you need to get to the hidden folder, there are three ways: Enter the path in the folder address bar: C:/Users/%USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local/DeadIsland/Saved/SaveGames
Basically, just download it and drop the Save Files into the "Cruelty Squad" folder, and you will be good to go. Just be aware about your old save files. Move them to another folder (make a backup), or overwrite them, in case you don't care.
